Run ins with Herky

Josh and I saw this commercial a few days ago. Worthy cause, but check out where Herky is shopping. Watch it and tell me it doesn't look like they've sent him to shop for toys at some sort of hardware store.

Also, we spotted this Herky Pillow Pet at Kohl's the other day. Tell me that he doesn't look a little like Woodstock from Peanuts.

Cubs win

We took in a Cubs game with Dean and Dawn over Labor Day and when the game was over we proceeded to spend our life savings while shopping in Chicago and Schaumberg. Sorry, no pictures of that spree. However, in the near future, I may be posting pictures featuring specific items from our shopping trip. Get excited.

Spring Has Sprung!

Now that spring is upon us, it is time to have some fun again. Get out of the house and live a little. My ankle has healed...for the most part and I am ready to enjoy the warm weather. As some of you may know, bands don't typically like to tour the Midwest in the winter. With the start of the spring music season I will be heading to Iowa City tomorrow night to enjoy the music styling of The Black Keys. Some of the bands will be announced for 80/35 on 4/19 and I am pumped about it and the fact that Old Crow Medicine Show will be playing Simon Estes this June! On a more depressing point, with spring to comes the start of baseball season and the Cubs are off to a lovely 0 and 2 start, loosing both in impressive fashion.

So excited for our alma mater! Maybe not as excited as Lee, but still very excited. And I must say Joshie and I are on a roll with the media. What have yahs Wednesday

1. To me, there's no better way to start the day than with a yummy bowl of Honey Nut Cheerios. It's become my go-to breakfast during the work week so naturally I had to buy it in bulk during our trip to Costco this weekend. Yipes!


2. Josh and I have been taking in a lot of Winter Olympics action and I have to say that Evan Lysacek definitely has the tall, dark and handsome thing covered.

3.I spotted Michelob Ultra's line of fruit flavored beer and I'm intrigued. Not intrigued enough to actually purchase it, but definitely curious enough to steal a sip from someone else that is intrigued enough to buy it.

UNI fight! Aight!

1. UNI defeats ISU 63 - 60. Hahaha take that Cyclowns.

2. These websites are a lot of fun if you have some time to kill. Deepleap and Totally Looks Like.

3. Outdoor Christmas decorations are so expensive. I can't believe how much just some little snowflakes cost. Also, why have the decorations become so gaudy? Do we really need a world filled with front lawns containing 30ft Santa Clauses and singing dancing baby Jesuses?

Looking forward

After this past weekend's debacle with the Hawkeyes, I'm looking forward to starting anew. Granted, starting anew means starting with our backup quarterback at Ohio State-yikes! Josh being the "Debbie Downer" of our house says that Iowa will not win another game this season. Not one to make snap judgements, I decided to do my research on this Vandenberg character before donning my pity party hat. I didn't find too much on him except for the fact that every media outlet likes to refer to the freshman as "baby faced". I got too annoyed with this cliche description and eventually gave up on my research.

Long time, no blog

Hello, hello! Josh and I are personally recommitting ourselves to our blog. We apologize for getting sidetracked by other boring issues, such as work, and for succumbing to laziness but we're happy to say that we are ready to reenter the blogosphere.

We haven't been up to very much, just lots o' football watching. College football abounds in our house and poor little Sudsy can't stand it. He thinks Josh is yelling at him every time there is a big play, especially during the Iowa games. Suds has taken to laying down in a completely different room when the Hawks play. I will admit that Joshie isn't the only one getting excited about Iowa's winning streak. I'm definitely super excited about it and even (gasp!) listened to the game on the radio when I ran out and got Tasty Tacos for lunch this weekend. Crazy, huh?

Wednesday what have yahs

2. I need to voice my opinion about something that has been annoying me for the past few months. I can't stand all of these people who insist on quoting songs for their Facebook status. Lame!

3.A sad day for all of us who grew up watching WWF wrestling. Captain Lou Alabano died today at the tender age of 76. Makes me miss watching "real" wrestling on Saturday mornings eating a bowl of cereal.

Game Day

We traveled to Iowa City this weekend to tailgate and frolic the streets of the Ped Mall for the BIG Iowa vs. Michigan game. While the Hawks continued their winning streak with a victory over Michigan, Josh and I continued our tradition of tailgating in Iowa City in wintry conditions. The chill in the air called for layers and heavy drinking.

My immediate reaction to this sight was "Are you f'in kidding me?"

Okay. So I have been dabbling in the arena of sports wagering the past couple of weeks. Not only is it fun but it makes the game between Florida Atlantic and Florida International exciting. I do not wager much of anything but I have been able to put my knowledge of NFL and College football to good use...sort of. I will begin to offer up a few suggestions for picks that I might make. For those of you who think I am involved in an illegal operation. Not so fast my friends! Bodog.com is completely legal. Remember this is for entertainment purposes only.

Michigan @ -7Iowa I like Iowa to pull it together on offense and to rattle the frosh Michigan QB.

Georgia Tech @ -3Florida State GA Tech has NEVER won in Tallahassee.

Auburn @ +3 Arkansas Ryan Mallett is too much for the fighting Chiziks.

Stanford @ Oregon State(pick em) Oregon State is improving and I can't trust Stanford on the road.

Georgia+1 @ Tennessee Richt has a 25-4 raod record in the SEC and Tenn isn't that good.

Indiana +6 1/2 @ Virginia Indy is better than most think and Va is awful.

Also, they have not posted an open line for the Florida @ LSU game. I thin LSU will win the game straight up, Tebow or no Tebow.

BBQ and Babies

I want my baby back, baby back, baby back, baby back...



Ribs.

I didn't get a pic of the finished BBQ'd product. Here the ribs are being boiled. The garage smelled like vinegar afterwards...mmm, vinegar.

The big Iowa vs. ISU game was this weekend so we made ribs and cheesy potatoes and had friends and friends' babies over to cheer on the Hawks. They won, hooray!

The game wasn't very close but it still seemed to tucker out Suds and Andrew. That's cute.

I swear the only thing we did this Labor Day weekend was eat. We spent the three days traveling to our next meal. Friday night started at El Bait Shop with drinks and Elvis Dip. I definitely think that El Bait Shop has our favorite patio downtown. After that, we made our way to Miyabi 9 for sushi.
Saturday started off with pastries at La Mie Bakery. Josh said that they have the BEST pecan roll he's ever had. Bold statement. I prefer to dine on their cheese danish but they had this prosciutto and asiago cheese filled croissant that we shared and it changed my whole outlook on pastries. It was like a classier version of Burger King's Croissanwich, a favorite dish of mine during high school study hall. Yum.

Saturday afternoon was Josh's homemade nachos (I really think we could start a farmer's market stand with these nachos). We watched the Hawks give everyone a heart attack by getting thisclose to losing the game to UNI. Yikes. If the rest of the season is going to go like this, I'm unsure that my little Lora heart can handle it. And I'm absolutely certain that Josh's heart can't.

Saturday night was dinner at Iron Wok, our favorite Chinese food place, with my family. They have the BEST sesame chicken hands down. Not too saucy, not overloaded with breading, perfect. The older generation of my family has an affinity for Chinese buffets so I don't think they were terribly impressed but I knew going into it that we weren't going to win that battle. Sigh.

Sunday and Monday was more of the same. Eat, drink, repeat.

What Have Yahs Wednesday

1.) The Cubs Mantra the past few years has been next year is this year, playing on the traditional Cubs anthem of "maybe next year". Well my friends next year is next year in this case. The Chicago National League ball club is dreadful and their chances of making the playoffs are about as good as me successfully growing a money tree in my backyard. I am not happy about it but rather pathetically numb to it by now. Football season can't get here fast enough. 17 more days until Hawkeye football!!!

2.) I have many friends who are teachers whom I love very much. Sorry but summer is over and you have to go back to work like the rest of us working stiffs. I know your summer break wasn't long enough and it's hard to get back into the swing of things after 3 months off but just think about the 2 weeks you'll get off for Christmas. Sorry guys.

3.)Trofie Pasta... ever heard of it? It is a pretty unique pasta that I haven't been able to find at but a few places. The last time I had Trofie I made a homemade mac n' cheese. This pasta is especially great for those who enjoy an al dente style pasta. I foresee a dish including Trofie in my near future. Enjoy!

Running Scared

We're about to head off to Davenport to (gasp!) run in the Bix. This seven-mile race draws the BEST of the best in the running game and when I say the BEST, I am not exaggerating. To put it plainly, the first ten runners to finish are always Kenyan, 'nuff said. Anyway, a few months ago my dear cousin-through-marriage, Annie said, "We should just do the Quick Bix. It's only two miles." I laughed nervously and said "Sure, why not?"

Now with only half a day between me and Brady Street hill, I'm still laughing nervously. True, two miles isn't a big deal for normal, well-exercised people. For me, my short Asian legs, and my heart that beats as fast as a field mouse when its resting, this is a HUGE deal. I'm a wimp, I know. I went ahead and bought some very official looking track shorts at Scheel's this week. I figure I can at least look the part when I'm huffing and puffing up and down the hill.
